- Around Issigeac -

Périgord pourpre, Périgord noir, Agenais

Between the bastides, castles,, gastronomy including foie gras, truffles and wine, of course, you will have plenty of ideas for visits or walks. The Dordogne valley is also perfect to practice many sporting activities with its lakes, rivers and forests.

Issigeac is on the edge of the Haut-Agenais in the Lot-et-Garonne, on the Castillonès, Villereal and Monflaquin road.

Varying according to the seasons, market stalls display strawberries and nuts from Périgord, boletuses, black truffles, and produce made from duck or goose such as foie

gras, all used to make delicious traditional dishes. Accompany them with local Bergerac wines - whether red, white or rosé - for an unforgettable gastronomic experience. With a 2000 year old winemaking tradition, Bergerac’s vineyards produce 13 products bearing the AOC label, meaning that they adhere to the government’s highest standards of local, agricultural produce.

You will find a famous market every day in the surroundings and every Sunday morning to Issigeac.

The wines's road

Legendary castles

The Bergeracois winegrowing area has over 900 winegrowers cultivating an area of 30,000 acres. Represented by 9 AOCs, a great variety of wines is produced, whether red, rosé, or white – themselves dry, slightly sweet (moëlleux) or very sweet (liquoreux)

In summer, the "Maison des Vins" in bergerac offers an introduction to wine-tasting on Friday mornings in English. Five different types of wine from the region are tasted, with an explanation of each AOC region and an introduction to wine tasting, colours, aromas and sensations. Every day from mid-June to mid-September, a winemaker from the Wine Route comes to meet visitors at the Maison des Vins to share his wines and his passion

Gastronomy

The Dordogne is nicknamed ‘the land of a thousand

and one castles’  due to its superbly restored castles which are scattered across the region, dating from the Middle Ages to Renaissance and Classical styles. These buildings have spanned centuries, and history’s upheavals and anecdotes are written into their bricks and mortar. The Chateau de Bridoire à Ribagnac close to Bergerac, and the Chateau de Sauveboeuf à Aubas close to Montignac , are amongst those open to the public.Near Issigeac we could also mention Roquepine, Beaumont-du-Périgord, Monpazier or Molières.

Situated, in Montignac / Dordogne, at the very heart of black Perigord, Lascaux Cave is the masterpiece of prehistoric art. Like every great Humanity’s creations, It’s a timeless and universal oeuvre. This 200 meters long cavity is an alternation of more or less circular rooms and corridors-tunnels. The last decades, researches permitted to situate chronologically Lascaux’s iconography between Solutrean and Magdalenian, about 20 000 years ago. Frescoes depict many animals : horses, bulls, cows, deers, mountain goats, felines, a bear ... and even a fantastic figure called "The Unicorn." Engravings and many enigmatic signs are also observed

Lascaux IV will be the most complete replica of the cave to date, close to the original site and recreating almost all of the 900 square metres of Palaeolithic paintings decorating the rocks of the original shelter.
